Kiln furniture supports should be selected as part of the loaded kiln arrangement. The support geometry, contact with the ware and position in the stack all matter. A support that fits the space still needs review against the actual load and firing cycle.

Show the complete support arrangement

Provide a drawing of the support and, where possible, the shelf or workpiece it carries. Mark the number of supports, their spacing, contact areas and the direction of loading. Include any locating recesses, stacking features or clearances needed for loading and unloading.

Information from the firing process

• Workpiece and supported assembly mass, including stacked layers where applicable.
• Heating, holding and cooling stages, including repeated-cycle use.
• Furnace atmosphere and any substances that may contact the support.
• Acceptable distortion, surface marking and replacement criteria.

Use a material-specific datasheet and an agreed evaluation plan to judge suitability. Avoid treating a generic cordierite temperature value as a load rating for the finished support.

Compare supports on the same basis
