Cracking, distortion and dimensional variation in a zirconia component require evidence before a process change. The visible defect is the starting point for investigation, not proof of one cause.
Record the defect and when it appeared
Identify the batch, part position and inspection stage. Note whether the issue was present after forming, after firing, after finishing or only after assembly. Photograph the defect with its location marked on the drawing, and retain comparison information from acceptable parts.
Separate the questions
- Dimensions: which feature changed, and were measurements made with the same method and datum?
- Shape: is distortion local to a thin section, transition or unsupported area?
- Cracking: where does it begin, and is the location repeated across parts?
- Surface condition: did the change appear before or after finishing or cleaning?
Review geometry alongside process records

Use a controlled evaluation
Agree which variable will be examined and how the result will be checked. Avoid prescribing a new temperature or hold time without the material and process information needed to justify it.
